 2023 Preview

Spring Garden completed the 2022 season with a 10-2 record. Last year Spring Garden captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-1 record. Spring Garden reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Coosa Christian by a score of 31-28.

The defense was very stingy last season as Spring Garden ranked 19th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.2 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Panthers have Finished 22-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Spring Garden has gone a combined 105-48. Their 68.6% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Spring Garden has managed to compile a record of 145-131. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 1A and 165th in the AHSAA.

The Panthers will be under the direction of new head football coach Barrett Ragsdale as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Ragsdale spent the last 12 seasons as the Panthers defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach in July.

Despite the departure of head coach Jason Howard, the Spring Garden Panthers are prepped for another playoff run. A veteran coaching staff has high expectations for a roster loaded with talented underclassmen. The first win in the 2023 season will be No. 200 in school history. The Panthers football program struggled for decades from its inception in 1969 posting just 3 winning seasons through 2007.

The Panthers have a big junior class that will be counted on when the season opens.

The Panthers enter the 2023 season riding a 7 game regular season winning streak.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Spring Garden has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Panthers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2013 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023.

With nine starters returning on defense and seven on offense, Spring Garden is ready to battle Ragland and Wadley for the 1A, Region 6 championship.

That trio finished in a 3-way tie in 2022 with Spring Garden coming out on top after all the tiebreakers had been applied.

Go Garden Go is the Panther mantra and Spring Garden has their fair share of blue maps from basketball and volleyball. Will Barrett Ragsdale be the one to lead the Panthers to the promised land on the gridiron? Only time will tell.

The Panthers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Sand Rock on Friday, August 25 at Russell Jacoway Stadium. Last year the Sand Rock Wildcats finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 2A region seven.

Spring Garden and Sand Rock have met a total of 35 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 11-24-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Spring Garden winning by a score of 40-8.

Spring Garden lost 1A All-State  offensive lineman Matthias Williams to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.
